For a number of reasons, we will be driving from Montana to Washington state with my son the day after he has surgery on his knee. They are doing an "open" surgery this time instead of orthoscopic, and his other leg will have 3 small incisions for harvesting. We just went through a similar scenario last January (surgery-wise, but without the long car ride right after), so I know what to expect to manage his pain and such. He will have the surgery in December and we are leaving the following morning (after a night in a hotel) to make the drive.
Other than making sure we have all the supplies we need for his comfort, as well as the normal "driving over mountain passes in the winter" supplies...are there any recommendations that I might not be thinking of? We can't be the only folks to travel immediately after surgery...who else has done it and how did it go for you?
Holy Cow, have you asked his surgeon about this? I would be surprised if the doctor would want him taking a long car ride so soon after knee surgery . As you know, the swelling alone can be a huge concern. I am not a doctor, but I do know a little about different kinds of knee surgery and think 24 hours later is awfully soon. Add to the surgery, you are talking about the possibility of a bad snow storm or who knows what else?

I agree. And what about the possibility of an auto accident and how that might affect his knee?
I spoke to the surgeon yesterday morning. He has ok'ed the trip, but put a couple of criteria items on it.
I can reassure everyone that is no concern or worst-case scenario that I haven't considered and tried to plan for. That's why I was putting the question out there, in case there is something I haven't thought of...
