I had a serious car accident where I (driver) was thrown from the car through windshield. Had double compound fracture in tibia and fibula, broke many other bones. 27 years later I am a mess. First, there were so many other things to worry about my neck ( not broken) was never really addressed. Now I have 2 bulging discs which cause referred headache pain (radiating pain up each rear side of neck.) I walked on crutches for 10 months with zero weight bearing. I had internal pins but no rod. There was an inch and half gap where bone discentigrated and had to fill in. I am 1 inch shorter on that side, lower part of leg is bowed, am facing an ankle fusion, knee replacement, and leg lengthening. By straightening the lower leg (entails cutting both bones, stretching to lengthen) the doctor hopes to avoid ankle fusion and knee replacement) The external fixator came on the scene years after my accident. My leg has caused me so much pain, I look forward to having it fixed. For those of you out there who have been in car wreck and had head/neck injury, don't let it go without physical therapy and serious consideration. It often doesn't hurt immediaLy. But it could cost you big time later on.
