Is there any? There is a lot of blood under the nail. The nail is intact, didn't crack or anything. There's a laceration just above the nail -- there was nothing that should have scratched me so I think the base of the nail came thru from the inside out. Should it be looked at? Will I lose the nail temporarily or permanently?
OUCH!! That musta hurt.
Probably want to visit the clinic and get a professional opinion.
The only real treatment is to keep an eye on it, and if the swelling becomes very bad, you may need to have pressure relieved under the nail. You don't really want to know the details on that, but you may want to visit the clinic.
In my experience, the nail will likely fall off at some point, but will very probably regrow.
Go down to the drug store and get a protector splint and tape it loose on the thumb to protect from banging it on things during normal activity.
I have found that it will hurt a lot at first and then the pressure will relieve the next day, or so. I usually see blood around the out edge of the nail. You then have a black thumbnail that will grow out slowly over the next year. The nail will grow back. Some say you can put a hole in the nail with a pin or a sharp object and this will relieve the pressure. I have tried this and I still had a sore thumb.
I've had this happen twice. First time, I was in college, and had to wait for months and months for the new nail to grow out.
The second time it happened was about 10 years ago, and my husband fixed it. He got a paper clip and heated it up and placed it on my nail until it burned a hole through it and the blood was able to seep out, thus relieving the pressure. Normally, I would not recommend someone doing this at home, but DH knew what he was doing, and what he did was pretty much what they do at a doctor's office or ER- they use a heated apparatus to get through the nail. And, yes, it hurt, but it fixed the problem and I didn't lose the nail or have to wait months for it to grow out like before. However, this has to be done rather quickly after the injury.

I'll keep that in mind if it ever happens again. Hopefully I'll be more careful from now on, but you know how that usually works out.
