I have Verizon Fios with a big box in the basement which apparently has a backup battery which is on its way out...I kept hearing chirps for a long time and we finally figured out that it was a warning beep that the battery was low. Maybe it is one of these boxes???

Ah--- I forgot all about this thread. It turns out a kid put a chirping smoke detector under some blankets in a closet in a rather out of the way place upstairs. We only found out after I called them all together and told them I was not going to cook one more meal until they found the source of the chirping noise. At that point, the kid suddenly "remembered' being annoyed with the smoke detector, knocking it down with a ruler and sticking it under the blankets. I'm amazed I could hear it with my hearing loss but apparently the loss is only for low tones. Mystery Solved. Thanks all for the suggestions. Kid was appropriately punished and reminded how important smoke detectors are--to say nothing of the sanity of her mother.

Sounds like a smoke detector to me. Maybe the batteries are low

Hurray! You're not crazy yet--despite being married and having children in the house. I'm still working on the low hum. It's really getting to me.
