LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A San Diego children’s hospital unveiled a collection of remote controlled luxury mini cars on Tuesday that allow its young patients to ‘drive’ themselves to the operating room.
The cars at the Rady Children’s Hospital are actually operated by a nurse or a doctor, and are part of a new program designed to make children more relaxed before their procedures.
Cute, but with the soaring cost of healthcare, you'd think they would focus more on essentials, rather than toys.
I was thinking the same thing.
What about all the anxiety older people go thru with hospital issues etc. They often give low dose benzo etc to adults, could do the same for the little ones....not toys to drive in.

Actions like this, which put children at ease during treatment, procedures and inpatient stays are essential to their care, IMO. Maybe this story's example is a bit over the top, but at the heart of what they're doing are important techniques to enable the patient, caregivers and families to best care for the unique medical needs of pediatric patients.
Most large children's hospitals employ professionals called Child Life Specialists to assist pediatric patients with all aspects of their care, from understanding and coping with their conditions, to play therapy, to actually assisting with relaxation techniques during procedures.

From the link in the OP:
"The cars were donated by the San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive."
Anything to ease a child's apprehension about surgery is fine with me, including toys.

surely you'd advocate a non-pharmaceutical intervention rather than using drugs unnecessarily?
