Every time I touch a door knob, shake someone's hand, press an elevator button, touch a light switch, a gas pump nozzle, money or just because. . .you get the picture. . .and based on some of the responses above, I may need to wash my hands even more.
I wash my hands before and after going to the bathroom and always take a shower after larger events. It's a dirty world.
With me it really depends on whether I am staying home for the day or going out and whether I am cooking a big meal. Some days I may wash them 5 times and other days I may wash them 20 times a day. If I've been out I always wash them the minute I come home and I keep hand sanitizer in my car. Think about all the things you touch daily that have been touched by hundreds of other people that day like the bank ATM buttons. They are actually dirty at my bank which tells me that is something that is never cleaned or sanitized.
same it seem like most others: about 4 or 5, depending. When I am heading to the kitchen I use a disposable handy wipe. if not heading in that direction I wash them after using the toilet and when working with anything that is dirty but I am not a health nut or cleanliness freak.
It's 7:17 AM and I've already washed my hands 11 times. I'm really surprised that the leading category is the 1-5 group. I suspect that many in that group are the folks we all see leaving the bathroom without washing (or lightly spritzing) their hands. I always take mental notes on who those folks are and remember to avoid shaking their hands.

I think this must be related to other activities you perform by yourself (or with yourself).
I wash my hands with soap about 10-12 times in a 24-hour period, including every time I use the bathroom.

And how many times a day do you use hand lotion? Or are your hands just a raw bleeding mess? Seriously! If so, then leaving your hands in such conditions makes you much more susceptible to picking something up.
