please feel free to add any you've heard about, i want to help people in regard to a
uptick (lol, pun is intended)
in tick borne diseases and a burgeoning swimming pool hazard.
This pool season, it's important to be aware about a relatively new parasite called "crypto" short for cryptosporidium that is resistant to chlorine disinfectants in swimming pools. Outbreaks have doubled since 2014. The CDC has issued a warning about this new germ and the high chances of coming into contact with crypto if you frequent public swimming pools or while on vacation in hotel swimming pools, hot tubs and water parks. This germ will cause symptoms like severe diarrhea, cramps, vomiting, nausea which then lead to severe dehydration. Keep all sick children out of public swimming pools if they have had diarrhea, as this is how the germ spreads in pools and will live for upwards of 10 days even in properly treated water..... in fact, if they were sick, keep them out of the water for at least two weeks to make sure there is no chance of a casual leakage.
just one mouthful of contaminated water is enough to make adults and children sick for 3 weeks or more. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so never change diapers anywhere near a pool, make sure you take your child on frequent bathroom breaks and do not swallow water when in a public pool. It's also a good practice to take a quickie shower before you or your children enter a pool, to get any germs off your body.
There's a new tick in town pardner.....and tick borne illnesses can be very difficult to diagnose.
The CDC has issued a warning that the tick that causes lyme disease, the black legged tick, is in more places and thus more people are being exposed....Lyme disease has more than doubled in the past 10 years, because this tick is found in many more states now. The good news is, there is a new weapon to help fight Lyme disease, you can take a picture of the tick you find on your body, and send it to
tickspotters.org and an entymologist will take a look at the tick, factor in where you live and how long the tick was on your body and then be able to tell you what the risk is your tick could cause you trouble. You no longer have to wait for a doctor visit which is great news because often the tick travels quickly to someplace you can't see or rarely will check and time is definitely a factor on whether you will get sick with Lyme disease....the sooner you start on an antibiotic, the sooner you will prevent the awful consequences of Lyme disease..... also ask your doctor or a county health department if they have a tick chart with pictures and descriptions of the major ticks that will cause you to get ill
Summertime Tick Prevention methods: always wear a long pant and socks if you are hiking in the woods, with a rubber band or bike band to prevent ticks from moving up your leg. Use an insect repellent with Permethrin and spray it all over your clothing and exposed skin areas AND YOUR SHOES!!!!! Daily tick checks are necessary for you, your kids and your pets.
