I recently had a bit of a health scare, heart related, that resulted in a trip to a walk-in clinic associated with the hospital/medical center where I normally go for medical care (not a stand-alone). I saw a nurse practitioner who ordered a stress test a few days later and gave me the results by email. Also prescribed a BP med.

Stress test was over a week ago and I have been taking the new med for 2 weeks. Would you expect any kind of follow up from either a PCP or cardiologist, both of which I have seen at the same medical center? Like, how are you doing with the new med, what has your BP been like, etc. Or am I living in the past? Just curious.

Yup....sorry to say. Those days are over. You are going to have to hound them.

For sure I would expect a follow up, or two or three, from either a cardiologist or PCP, to see how you're doing on that new medication, your ongoing BP, have you had any further issues that led to the stress test. If nothing else, you will probably be taking that BP med on a long term basis and will need someone to prescribe it.

If they didn't give you a follow up appointment ( or at least instruct you to follow up with your PCP,), I would contact the clinic to ask them about a followup.

Wow. You mean no follow up appointments for you either? Or did you have to hound the providers to get them?

depending on where you live and the overall medical facilities, compared to the population you may not hear anything more as long as all is well. This is why having a regular primary care doctor is a huge advantage. I am guessing you will not hear back from anyone. If you had a PC doctor he/she would be doing a follow up. Things have changed over the years and not all for the best for sure.

Did they have you schedule another appointment for follow-up, or suggest following up with your primary? If not, they should have done that, and it's important. Call them. Make certain they will send documentation of your visit to your primary (test results, meds, etc.) so she/he will be knowledgeable about your situation.

No, you aren't living in the past. Unfortunately this is nothing new. Especially lately, some medical practices just aren't on the ball, or are understaffed at present. Lots of people left health care jobs due to the risks, if they could swing it.

This is not uncommon given the route by which you accessed the health care system. If you have a PCP, best to just ask for the documentation from the care center and take it in to the PCP yourself. Even though the care center you accessed may be associated with the hospital from which you get care, it may have been a satellite with a different EMR so the data may not be accessible by your care providers in the hospital. It is always a good idea to maintain a PCP, even if it's just for annual visits.

I have had some great doctors lately that have followed up with me, even more than once but they are specialists not GP's. My GP has yet to ever follow up with me.

I do have a PC doctor, as well as a cardiologist, at the same institution. It was after speaking to her nurse that I went to the after hours clinic, so they are aware of the situation. They all share the same electronic record keeping system.
