New data released Wednesday show that adult obesity increased in the U.S., last year, while racial and ethnic disparities persist, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The findings may be especially concerning amid the pandemic as obesity lends worse outcomes from COVID-19, and minorities are disproportionately impacted by both the virus and obesity.

What do you think is attributing to this increase?

I think that being trapped at home is a major player. Many people are afraid to go out with the pandemic. Many people now work from home and never leave the house.

I have always been a hard worker. I had friends that told me I would work myself to death. About fifteen years ago I retired from trucking and my friends retired. I did not stop working, even though retired, I simply went to work for another company close to me. My friends and coworkers that retired and went home and did nothing are dead; all of them. They could not wait to retire and do nothing and nothing kills. It doesn't have to be work, but you always have to stay active.

I did take a year off when my wife was dying from cancer and I gained 20 pounds. I went back to work to keep busy after her death and I lost the 20 pounds I gained. Of course it would be great if I could lose more. But I would never lose weight going to a gym. I like the idea of being paid to lose weight!

I just think that all of our solutions to the corona virus might kill as many as the virus itself. If we don't do anything I feel our days are numbered.

What do you expect? You lock folks inside. You close gyms and parks. You force people to move less. You stress them out to the point of psychosis. Ask yourself simple question. How is THAT going to influence weight?

We were an obese nation long before COVID. Its true that being on lockdown and having gyms be closed are not helping, but the lockdown is not the problem. No one is locked inside to the point that they cannot take a walk, hike, or run.

People eat for emotional reasons and they eat terrible food, and a lot of it. That is the reason we are so fat as a nation. I don't know if we will ever collectively slim down because it is just too hard for most people. The fast food, candy, and soda is a panacea to what ails these folks.

It takes a lot of discipline to cook your own food, resist all the junk being advertised on TV and in supermarkets, and do exercise when it’s not necessary...especially the older you get. Most people don’t have that discipline, especially in this country.

Agreed...just look at the long lines at the drive-thru for any number of Fast Food restaurants...heck look at the portions at regular restaurants! It has been nice that they label the calories on items on menus now...but most people will overestimate their energy/activity levels and thus eat more than they need to. Weight loss and maintenance is roughly 80% diet. People over emphasize exercise....it is absolutely essential but not the way most people think. Walk a lot, lift heavy 1-3 times a week....there, problem solved. However, the real problems our society has are the ridiculously long commutes people have and the insane amount of hours people need to work a week....sometimes there isn't a lot of time for exercise. But, as stated before diet is the most important so if people can just master that then they stand a good chance at losing and maintaining weight. Yes it is hard and yes different people can do better on different diets. People with damaged metabolism often do better on lower carb diets; other people don't need that.

Holy Cow: this question comes up over and over and the answer is very easy: too much sugar in our foods and not the exercise people got back when. We drive everywhere, kids do not play outside like we did years ago, more eating out than in the past and on and on and on. We take in more calories than we burn off: it is that simple.

I will add one more thing and this is just my opinion, I do not totally trust reports from CDC.

How is sugar is sugar the cause of obesity when sugar consumption has been declining while obesity has been increasing? Also how is one able to lose 25 lbs on a Twinkie diet consuming over 150 grams of sugar a day?

It's not an unsolved mystery. Processed and fast foods are high calorie, low nutrient foods. Their diets are nutritionally deficient. Their bodies are craving missing nutrients and they keep up the futile pursuit to satisfy that bodily need with more high calorie garbage foods.

Nutrient-dense foods are low calorie. Hunger is a craving for nutrients, regardless of any emotional issues they've attached to foods.

Shame on the CDC for trying to make it a race issue.

A morbidly obese person can easily lose 25 pounds of water weight even if they eat Twinkies. It’s called ketosis.
