In the U.S. when TV ads started, I thought that kids, especially, would be affected by the subliminal messages.
Also: The ads specifically SAY: "ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF "X DRUG" IS RIGHT FOR YOU." - the onus was put on the "patient," to decide what drugs they wanted to take, and that basically they just needed to call the dealer doc to get them.
The doctor upthread who was upset that "patients" used to ask him for particular drugs must not have had a TV because they were told to do that.
I've never asked for medicine because of an ad, and as far as I can recall, I have never purchased any product in my life because of an advertisement.
"Tell your doctor if you have cancer or a liver transplant (like they wouldn't know). Side effects may include heart attack, stroke, blooding from the bowels and death" while a fat lady sings and dances in the background with an idiot grin on her face.
Here`s another way to look at this. There are app. 200 countries that don`t advertise pharmaceuticals on tv and 2 countries that do. Is there something wrong with the 200 or is there something wrong with the 2?
