This is only a shock to those who think they can control their own destiny by eating and living "right."

Guess what? There are forces at play over which you have no control and you're just fooling yourself if you think that isn't so.

Wrong......again.....

There are absolutely modifiable risk factors that can lessen one's chances of heart attack...

Not smoking Mod cut

Eating right...

Exercising....

Weight control....

One can't control getting older and we don't get to pick our parents or our gender so yes, some things are out of our control...

IF YOUR THEORY WERE CORRECT....then otherwise healthy 39 yo women who don't smoke, exercise and eat right should be dropping dead in equal numbers to men who are overweight, smoke and lie around on the couch all....

Since that IS NOT the case, and CLEARLY people who abuse their bodies die from causes related to their abuses at much younger ages on average than those who take better care of themselves your point has no merit.

Ask yourself....why was this case newsworthy??

Do otherwise healthy 39 yo women routinely suffer heart attacks??

Would they have even bothered to do a story on a 48 yo overweight male smoker who had a heart attack??

Why bother, happens every couple of minutes in this country.....

But I suppose that it had nothing to do with "choices" made by that individual...."larger forces" were at work....

Mod cut

My dad had his first heart attack at 30. He was lean and fit.

These factors are incredibly important but there are always going to be people who don't follow the norm. That is true for absolutely everything you can measure.

Something caused her arteries to clog. It could even have been heart damage from a childhood injury or an anomaly - it may have been stress - who knows? [That happened to my dad - it was clear everywhere but that one spot and they surmised he could have dropped dead at any age - he was one of the first folks in the US to have an angioplasty and never had a lick of problems with his arteries for the remaining 30 years of his life when cancer took him.]

One of the problem with the early drug coated stents that came out in 2003 and were widely used was the underlying artery did not heal all the way and became a locus for new inflammation. He "missed out" on the coated stents by ONE DAY and are eternally grateful he got the old style in 2003.

When my husband had a new stent this time [he had a prior minor heart attack] the old one was clear and the occlusion was in a large artery so they were able to use a bare metal stent. Right now, most folks on coated stents take plavix for life, which is a very expensive drug that can cause problems if you are in an accident and need further surgery. Going off of plavix can cause a sudden clot.

People should check out magnesium. I know our society pushes calcium and now vit D but mag is a BIG need especially when taking calcium. There is quite a bit of info out there on low mag levels and the heart.

Great, another thing to worry about.
Despite all this exercise and moderate healthy eating, I can STILL have a heart attack.
