In honour of the men who served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada during World War 2 we present their photographic journey from Toronto to England in the fall of 1939 and the spring of 1940. Their heroic contribution in France (1940), Sicily and Italy (1943-44) and finally the liberation of Apeldoorn in 1945 will live on in our memories and in the displays at the 48th Highlanders Regimental Museum at 73 Simcoe St Toronto, Ontario.

Here is a link to a YouTube video showing their journey.

There is something about the playing of the Pipes and men going off to war that makes the eyes misty.

We will never see it again now that the British got rid of the last Highland regiments by merging them with the Lowland Scottish regiments

Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand also had "Highland" regiments complete with kilts and bagpipes. Do they still exist in those armies?

Yeah, Both the Australian and New Zealand armies, still have regiments who maintain their Highland tartans and alliances.

The 48th Highlanders are still an active militia but someday they may be merged with other units.

Many of the traditions of the regiments will be lost if they merge.

It's all about dollars and cents. For example the 48th Highlanders have held an annual church parade every year since the regiment was founded in 1891. This year there were no funds to have the regiment parade and only a handful volunteered to turn out.
