Whoever wrote that nailed it. Whose quote is that?

Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that our desire will ruin us.
Looks like Huxley got it right.

What's sadder is this delusion that all our soldiers are automatically fighting for our freedom. If they want to do that, they should storm the Capitol. We already have our 'freedom,' such as it is; they're fighting to make life harder for terrorists.

thats what i ment, by our freedom i mean making sure terrorist cant strike us again. but we will never be truly free as long as capitalism exist. or any form of government.

if i was truly free, i wouldnt have to work 10 hours a day , go home pay bills, sleep, and repeat

That's not freedom. That's safety. There is a major difference.

American culture is basically pop culture which is now youth culture. Not saying if this is good or bad but it is. The opposite of this is having no period of being a teenager, you go from a child to an adult with all the entailing responsibilities, and you marry quite young by today's standards. There is also a niche culture so that whatever your interest you can spend a good deal of volume on it. The opposite of that is spending time with family and community doing the same activities as them together. Families used to eat dinner at a table together focused on each other, then they began to eat dinner in front of the TV in the living room focused on that, finally they began to eat dinner in front of a TV alone in their room. Houses are even made in a way that they separate families and keep them in isolated nooks. We call this modern culture and could not be further from the truth. It is a lack of culture.
