I often wonder what did the Jewish people do leading up to WW-II to turn so many Europeans and Americans against them or ignore their fate? Certainly, some people just don't like other cultures, but on such a vast scale?. Even the USA did not care much about the plight of the Jews even after we discovered the concentration camps in 1943. What did the Jewish people do to get tossed aside to quickly?

Killed Christ.

That was a bit facetious but the Catholic Church did not change it teachings on that until the 1960s.

Anti-Semitism is a theme that runs through European history almost since the Diaspora. Pogroms in Russia, confiscation of property in most of the other countries throughout the Middle Ages up until at least the 1600s if not later.

Remember, Catholic teaching prohibited lending money at interest and the various kings and potentates had to get to get financing for whatever their plans were (Crusades, castles, taking back Brittany, etc.) and since Judaism had no qualms about loaning money the kings went to the Jewish moneylenders. And many time had their entire holdings in hock.

You can see it today, on these forums, the absolute hatred many have for bankers. It was no different back then. Hitler merely built on European trends that had been around for 1500 years.

I believe that their basic crime was being the sort of minority group that aristocractic Europe was used to kicking around, but instead of keeping to their proper station, they had the nerve to be smart, industrious and successful. Those are not things which can be tolerated when coming from apostate inferiors.

I too had this same question recently...the other posters are more knowledgeable here but I did try to research online the answers. Indeed, this was an ongoing issue way prior to WWII. Internet info was helpful.

It might not have been that "most people" hated them which led to the holocaust. Just the people with the guns had to hate them.

I dont think most Europeans hated Jews, only the Nazis and nazi supporters were then. I dont think the catholic church hated Jews at that time either. The Catholic church was more interested in trying to convert them than see them being killed off.
