How little we understand today how radical it was what these men did. With every action they broke down barriers and paved the way for future generations.

We were very quickly and loudly taught (right at the yellow foot prints) that there was not such thing as black or white in the Corps anymore. We were all green. Light green, dark green, olive green, etc... Didn't mean I didn't over hear that crap out in the fleet; but at PI, nope.
These are my experiences only. Now, with that said:
When you are neck-deep in sh*t, when death is flying all around you, and the only thing you can count on is the fellow beside you, skin color is about the LAST thing on your mind. White, Black, Red, Yellow -- it just don't matter.
They are part of, "The Greatest Generation". Life then was not easy for a lot of people and even more so for these men and their families. Yet they endured and overcame. If only the following generations had truly inherited what that generation, those Marines and others like them had, we would be a richer people for it. But, I fear, that many, myself included, being born late in the "Baby Boomer Generation" wouldn't pass the test.
