Giuseppe Garibaldi, the great leader and strategist who unified Italy, was once offered supreme command of the Union Army during the American Civil War, but he first wanted clarification that the war was being fought to free the slaves. The American envoy making him the offer, was unable to assure him of the Union's slavery position.
