I only know of the Silent Generation, the Baby Boom Generation, Generation Y and then Generation Z. But I never have known what the previous generation was called or even the one before that for that matter. Can anyone tell me? I really would like to know.

Check post #16 and post #23 in the thread "What Will the New Generation be Called". You'll find the Generations named going back to the Civil War. Sorry, I'm not sure how to quote a post from one thread to another thread.

They were known as the World War II Generation, but Tom Brokaw refered to them in his book as "The Greatest Generation" and that seems to have caught on.

And prior to that, they were often referred to as the "GI generation"; I think a lot of our attuitudes depend upon how one views his relations with / obligations to a growing, and increasingly intrusive central government.

GI Generation.

Before that, the Lost Generation (came of age in the 20s - Scott Fitzgerald and all that).
