To expand on the question, while there are a lot of obvious differences between now and 1950 in terms of technology, culture, etc., I wonder which changes or new things they'd grasp easily and which would be utterly perplexing.

Mod comment added on 10/12: Please do not air your personal politics in this thread. We have a Politics forum for that. Thanks! PJSinger

But if this situation involved time travel it is more fun to explain.

Depends on his interests, but:

For me, it would be why my car has no carburetor. And sometimes no key! And they're all air conditioned!

Cell Phones; Even though I have worked with WW II radios, the size and power of these new fangled things would be beyond comprehension. It has no tubes!

Why kids don't play in the vacant lots in the neighborhood.

Why people go to the doctor for a sprained ankle.

Why milk isn't good for you anymore, and the milkman doesn't exist....

What does this -- mean?

How is it the Yankees are not in the World Series?

People admit they are gay (Only that wasn't the word used in 1950)?! Really?!

You get paid more if you work for the government + you get to retire early.

The M-1 tank, which shoots accurately while on the run.

The high schools have security guards? Why?

If someone from the 1950s suddenly appeared today, what would be the most difficult thing to explain to them today?
How it is that they were suddenly transported forward in time.

After that, probably why the "Amos & Andy Show" is never rerun.

  • A little rinky dink country called Vietnam beat the US in a war
  • Despite having the largest most expensive war machine in history, the US hasn't won a "real" (non cold war) conflict since WWII
  • The US put men on the moon in about nine years and did it five out of six times successfully with engineers who used slide rules, had practically no computers, no internet, no email, no word processors while today it takes ten years to assemble a tinker toy space station and three days to get the toner cartridge changed in the office printer.......wait a second....now that I think about it....there's no way we put a man on the moon.
  • Babe Ruth's home run record is broken
  • NBA guards are bigger than centers were
  • Humans may break a three minute mile and a two hour marathon
  • People still believe in god

You hit on a lot of good ones and gave me a few more ideas.

Cars: brakes, steering, oil changes few and far between, electric cars, park assist...

Food: GMOs, all the allergies (peanut, etc.)

Tech: iPod / iPad / flatscreen TV's (where's the rest of it? ), digital cameras - P&S and SLR

School: some don't allow playing tag and don't teach cursive writing

I could go on... This is fun to think about!
