Who's some of your best pared generals through out history? For example Grant/Sherman during the U.S. Civil War. If you want to explain why then please do so.
John Churchill (Duke of Marlborough) and Prince Eugene of Savoy during the War of Spanish Succession. At the time they were referred to as the "twin constellations in glory".
Together they led the forces of Britain and Austria against the French and Bavarians at the Battle of Blenheim which knocked Bavaria out of the war and assured that the French would not capture Vienna. Later they went on to fight a series of battles in the Netherlands, clearing the French out and defeating the Duc de Villars in the bloody battle of Malplaquet. They later went on to clear virtually all of the French border defenses.
The pair was broken up never being able to secure the final battle to defeat the French when the new Tory government in Britain recalled Marlborough and negotiated terms with the French to prevent the Hapsburgs from becoming too powerful.
Together these men stopped the French advance that would have left Louis XIV in control of Spain and it's colonies, the German territories and Italy and most likely disintegrated the Austrian Empire. If they were allowed to have continued the war together it is possible that the Bourbon French monarchy would have been toppled in the early 1700's changing the future course of Europe irrevocably.
Here's one you might not expect -- Chief Joseph and General Oliver Otis Howard, in 1877.
Joseph wasn't a general of any sort, he wasn't a warchief, not even a behind the scenes master strategist. He was not the overall chief of the Nez Pierce, just the head of one particular section of the tribe. Nor was he a military man, he did not command the famous retreat of the tribe, nor any of the actions which were fought.
Joseph is remembered for his famous speech when it came time to surrender and this has resulted in people associating his name alone with the epic trek and assigning Joseph a role he never actually played.
