Mind you Mel Gibson was banging on about his North British and Viking ancestry recently, and I seem to remember him being very pro British ( well to Northern Yorkshire Chickens) in Chicken Run. Maybe I`m clutching at straws
Why do Americans think they deserve all the credit for the second world war anyway? It must be the propaganda in the US (probably only beaten by the propaganda in North Korea). Why is there no Russians or Canadians coming out with 'Why do the Brits deny Russia / Canada bailed them out in WW2'?
Unfortunately the (quite frankly s*it) attitude of (some) Americans is breeding resentment which in the long run won't be a good thing.
We could always turn it around. If Britain hadn't stayed in the fight, maybe the US would have found it much more difficult to become the superpower it eventually did, or at least it would have taken longer? With huge amounts of money pouring in from Britain (which at the start of the war was still an extremely rich nation with resources around the globe) to purchase weapons, fuel and other supplies, it allowed the US to gear-up its own war machine and economy.

Which Americans are claiming that?

Not all but many (try reading through this threasd for examples) or even just read the threads title again. 'Why do Brits deny US bailed them out in WW2' is simply disrespectful to the millions of Britons who fought and suffered in the fight against Nazism, if anything it was the Russians that 'bailed out' the West, it was the Russians that suffered the most. I think Britons are grateful to ALL its Allies for the invaluable help that ALL the Allies put in to fighting an evil regime, without Briton there would have been no DDay, without Russia there would have been no DDay, without the French resistance there would have been no DDay and yes without the Americans there would have been no DDay, may I suggest that (some) Americans need to try a little humility before they turn the respect people have for their veterans into scorn.

Certainly the portrayal of the English in "Braveheart", and especially the completely un-historical scene of the "eveeeeel" British burning down a church full of people in "Patriot" seem to suggest otherwise ?
Perhaps by the "Northern British" he meant Scottish ?

Britain, Australia, Canada, the French reistance, the dutch resistance, Austria, china, Poland, india, and the rest of them would NOT have won WWII without the USA...Europe and the UK would be part of the soviet union, or would have been for a long time...or they would be part of Germany, or Japan...there I said it
And even though you said it with conviction, it's still wrong.

Disagree. Without USA, the Soviets would end up controlling all or most of Continental Europe. Germany would lose to them just like it did, only with more losses on both sides. And there was no army in Europe capable of stopping them, plus very strong socialist and communist sentiment everywhere from Greece to Italy and even France. Britain would block the Channel just like it did with Germany, but was surely not in the position to fight on the continent, plus the Soviet spies and agents of influence were running rampant there.
