Little known 2nd longest uninterrupted structure in the world:
Kumbhalgarh (literally "Kumbhal fort") also known as the Great Wall of India is a Mewar fortress on the westerly range of Aravalli Hills, in the Rajsamand district near Udaipur of Rajasthan state in western India. It is the second-longest wall of the world after the Great Wall of China.
It is not fully unearthed, so its entire length is not known. It varies between 80+ to 120 km estimated.
It is super impressive, very beautiful. Though much shorter, in my eyes, it is much more impressive than GWC.
How long is it though? The Great Wall of China is incredibly long. There isnt just one long wall either. They are USA interstate long.
Somewhere north of Iran, I think in Turkmenistan or something, there are five massive forts. It likely served as inspiration for GRR Martin's Five Forts of Yi Ti.
I think that the walls of Kumbhalgarh get their props from being pre-modern and still in existence. For example, Hadrian's Wall was much longer at 73 miles, as was the Berlin Wall at 96 miles, but neither still exist in their original complete structures.
I never saw this fort/wall but in my travels to India I saw some impressive forts - the Red Fort in Delhi and the Mehrangarh Fort near Jodhpur, Agra fort near the Taj. All I think are built from red sandstone, which gave them a different appearance from the stone fortifications in other countries. These really aren't ancient forts/wall in terms of comparable to the Great Wall of China, but medieval structures.
They gave the British a challenge during it's (East India Company) subjection of India in the 18th & 19th century. One seige was fictionalized in Cornwell's "Sharpe's Fortress".
Welcome. As I said, estimated length is 82-120km. Much of it is buried under the soil, so no one really knows, how long it is.
Wall is said to be so wide in some areas that they could put 8 elephants side by side. It's immense structure.....
I am amazed, how many titanic structures is still preserved in India. It almost looks like they didn't sleep or rest, only built, built, built...
