BERLIN (Reuters) - Three vast tunnels were opened under central Berlin this month, giving a glimpse of Adolf Hitler's megalomaniac vision of a new architectural centre for the capital of Nazi Germany.

It was nothing more than a crazed dictator's dream. The giant masonry arch that was proposed would have been too heavy to be supported by the relatively soft, flat river valley land that Berlin is built upon. Besides, it would have been turned to rubble by the Red Army like almost everything else in the city in Spring 1945. The tallest hill in Berlin is the Teufelsberg (which is aptly translated as Devil's Hill). It is about 300 feet tall and contains the rubble from 500,000 demolished buildings. If that giant arch had been built, the Teufelsberg might be an extra 30 or 40 feet tall with that extra rubble. Underneath the Teufelsberg are the ruins of an elite Nazi war and technology think tank complex that Albert Speer built for the Nazi war machine. After the allied victory in 1945 and the partition of Berlin, the secret think tank buildings were meant to be destroyed, but they were built of so much reinforced concrete they could not be blasted down. So the Teufelsberg was piled on top because they couldn't destroy the war think tank complex. A few years later, the US Army built a radio listening tower on top of the Teufelsberg (I was there several times during the cold war years). It was used to listen in on Russian and East German military and civilian radio transmissions. Today there are some nice condo and apartment buildings with stunning views of greater Berlin on the Teufelsberg.
