Here is the google map links of the area. Was curious if anyone knows how it was named Negro Island. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl Directly south of Scarboro, GA may have to type that into the map section to get it to come up correctly.

Georgia 30442

Google Maps look at the map, terrain, and satellite views. I found this link that has something to do with, but not why it was named Negro Island. It seems to be a area that lies inbetween where the Ogeechee River splits and comes back toghether in South Georgia. From the link below sounds like the area saw some battles during Shermans march to Savannah, GA.

It appears that the actual historical name is John's Negro Island, named either after an escaped slave or one stolen depending on the reference.

So why would they name it after a escaped slave? Do you have the reference that gives the date the island was named that. Was that area a place where they kept slaves. The ogeechee river floods from time to time, and wonder if that whole area goes under water since it lies inbetween the area where the river splits. Does not seem to have any population there now from the satellite view from google images.

Hilton Head Island used to be a "negro island" until they sold it back to the whites. Hilton Head Island was originally given to former slaves as reparations after the Civil War.

So it was part of the whole "40 acres and a mule" thing.

Paris Hilton's maid lived there for a while.

Well, not very possible...

Just besides there's a population called Madray Springs... Sounds like an altered Spanish name, Madre or Madrid..

It could be a term for a Maroon colony, African Americans were present in South Carolina in around 1526, they were brought there by the Spanish, many of them rebeled and fled to the swamps with Natives , possibly creeks , Maroon areas are more well known in Hispaniola , at any rate the colonies were dangerous and they were left alone. That area has a history on Independent Africans like those of the Georgia South Sea Islands, There are many places known as "negro" this or that, I suspect they were independent enclaves of Africans, some that would of predate the European Slave trade or Spanish Slaves in what was to be called the United States, There is a Negro Mountain in West Virginia and a Negro Island in Main.
