Chatting on forums like this, reading stuff on internet, posting jokes and stuff - is this a hobby? Why or why not does it qualify as a hobby?

Yes, I think it qualifies as a hobby. It was a lot easier to justify in the late 80s when one actually had to know some programming to get online.

For me, it's a hobby when it pertains towards researching a project I am working on (one of my other hobbies)

For instance, I'm building a custom distributorless ignition system using late model components, on an early model engine. I've got about 3-4 hours of internet research into this downloading and studying wiring diagrams and searching for parts. For me, the "research" part I spend online is a separate hobby that I enjoy very much.

I think it is. Perhaps I should call it reading. I find many, many articles, stories and blogs in this world.

That's up for you to decide. I say yes. Do I care if people disagree? Nope.
