I like reading the news and learning ways to make $$. I don't like to tell people this because I don't want them to think I'm greedy or money hungry. Also don't want them giving me unsolicited advice, so I just tell them I like to read. But just wondering, would investing count as a hobby?

Yes, it can, especially if one is using imaginary money, which people should do anyway when they are starting out. There's a great free game online. Google: Wall Street Survivor. It's fun!

Once you make money, it becomes less of a hobby. Hobbies are really not supposed to make you rich. Although, a dream job would be doing what you love, a hobby.

If you have a little money to play with, why not get involved in investing? The next best thing is sitting in front of you every day.

Only spend what you can afford to loose. Worst case scenario but as generations die most objects become so old school that this is why interest, and time, have passed them by. I'm sure many examples will be presented. Will leave this to specialists who offer finely tuned details.
Have fun but just don't go overboard.

Only if you're doing it with "mad money"
Otherwise it's far too serious to treat so lightly.

So... have 90-95%% of your liquid assets in solid equity choices of the buy & hold sort?
Then by all means entertain yourself with the last 5-10%.
You might even do better than taking it to Vegas and playing poker.

Investing is absolutely a hobby. I do it not to be greedy as I have what I need already. I don't care to upgrade to a larger house, or buy a fancier car, or show off. I like investing because I like participating in the game.
