When we would visit my parents after they retired to Las Vegas, my Dad would sometimes take us to a spot where cars could park and watch the planes land there. One day, we went in the late afternoon and stayed until we couldn't read the writing on the side of the plans. When we had our daughter and she got to an age where she could enjoy it, my Dad would take her there. On subsequent trips, she would ask to go.

I haven't been to Las Vegas in years since my parents passed. If I had to guess, these days you wouldn't be able to get that close to the airport. Back then, there was only a chain link fence separating us from the runways.

I like to ride trains but try to have a destination at the end. Maybe someone I know, an attraction near a station, etc. I've rode trains in many States.
Some don't ride, but like to watch. Of course with freight trains that's your only choice. Many get chased off railroad property.
Some go to railroad museums to ride trains, and the hardcore even volunteer. I heard of one volunteer who actually works for a railroad full-time.
I don't spot airplanes, but know people who do. Go to any big airport, and on a nearby road you will see cars parked with air fans. Yes, even with the new security rules.

If you look around airports you will probably find the public observation spot where people will park and watch planes take off or land. I remember doing that as a kid with my parents. Now my daughter will do it on occasion as a lunch spot.

I ride trains whenever I can rather than fly. I enjoy train travel but don’t see that as a hobby.

Is this unusual?
No, not at all.

Check out the various youtube videos of not only trains(both commuter , Amtrak, or different countries) but pub transit in various cities. These are all done by folks who love this stuff including the people who make comments.

There are also uploads of historical trains and pub trans systems from the past like the 3rd Ave El in NYC.

I ride transit every day because I don't drive anymore. Happily I like riding it. And I don't have to make it a special occasion.
