Should Canadian NHL fans root for Atlanta to get another team? (playoffs, hockey) - - City-Data Forum

Just thinking (and a quick wikipedia search may prove me wrong), but so far Atlanta has had two NHL franchises. They both left for Canada after a few years didn't they? Is another Atlanta franchise the quickest path to another Canadian franchise?

I think one big thing lost in the Thrashers move was that Ted Turner sold out to Time Warner not long after they came into existence if I remember correctly. If they had had the tv support on TNT and TBS that the Braves had before Turner sold out to Time Warner the franchise and the state of hockey in the South might be considerably better off than they are right now.

They couldn't keep a minor league team either,so I think they should leave hockey alone.

The NHL is finished with Atlanta.

Barring another ice age, hockey won't work in Atlanta. The Deep South's subtropical climate just isn't conducive to a sport played on ice.

It's not so much that as it is the fact that Atlanta had TWO teams and both left..... inronically enough, for CANADA.

Yeah, agreed all around. They need to learn from their lesson a second time here, and give up on hockey in Atlanta.

Sadly, I agree. I just don't know how cities like Tampa Bay or Miami (Panthers) can support hockey teams, but Atlanta has such a difficult time. Even Nashville and Carolina are doing alright, but somehow Atlanta can't manage to garner enough support. Seems odd to me.

Atlanta had 3 seasons above .500 in 11 years and made it to the playoffs once. Carolina and Tampa Bay won Stanley Cups in the last decade, and Nashville has made it to the playoffs about 5 out of the last 6 seasons.

The Thrashers just never really had a good enough team to draw much interest---if they had any potential to be contender in the playoffs maybe they could've drawn a better fanbase.
