I'm having trouble finding an oak that matches, which is weird because it looks like "classic oak" to me! Again, I'm okay with that in the bedrooms because of the clean definition between old floor and new floor. The tricky part now is the front room. The wide entryway and first hall, kitchen, family room, and continuing to the back of the house is oak. The front room, now carpet, buts up against the entryway and first hall so I think putting something down that almost matches, but not quite, will look weird. So I'm thinking of having something installed that will be a clear definition, like Brazilian Cherry or something in that color family. That room is very big so I think a dark floor will be okay.

You may need to spend some money on a decent floor guy. He/she should be able to mix a stain that matches your current floor as closely as possible. He can also give you more information about the type of oak.

I would also recommend an oil-based finish. If the floor guy mixes a couple of samples and lets them dry, you can compare them to the current floor and pick the closest one.

Also, by "match" I think that the color and the *size of the flooring should remain the same. Also, for the person who suggested an Oak bathroom or kitchen floor. I'm not sure if wood is a great flooring choice for wet areas.
