You need a mantle up there if that's the minimal amount of effort of money. I would call that contractor back - it is off center and looks extremely odd.
How the heck can she put a Mantle there? someone will come around that corner and knock themself out-I say put a flat screen TV on the wall- according to my husband that solves everything............

Ugh, double focal point.
OP is trying to shift attention away from the weird fireplace, not to it.....I know that it was your husbands idea....

The mantel needn't go from end to end on the wall, just centered. And it doesn't have to be a "traditional" mantel, maybe just a slab or shelf mantel.
Right now, it just looks very odd, apart from being off center.

The mantel was my idea, the poster was quoting me. It sticks out like a sore thumb even more on it's own, with nothing above it. There is NO WAY you can shift attention away from it as it is. It is the elephant in the room.
Again, I'm not talking about a big, bulky, traditional style mantel.

Something like this, that would wrap around the corner all the way to the other wall would take away the focus on the off kilter hole in the wall.

I knew it was you that suggested the mantel, I have to respectfully disagree with you on that one, a mantel would draw the eye even more.
A very minimal, clean look is the only fix to that mess.

I would take off the white trim around that column or whatever it is, put the tile around the top of the fireplace then hang a mantel or a nice photo above. There isn't much you can do with this. The other option is to take out the fireplace altogether.

I would have to disagree. A minimal, clean look will draw the eye directly to the off-center hole in the wall.
Um, no it wouldnt.
One puts the main focal point somewhere else in the room.
Um, yes it would.
There is no getting around the bad design, off kilter hole with a bad tile job. The whole "wall" is in the middle of the room, already set up as a somewhat focal point. What could one possible put in the room as another focal point that would draw the eye away from that whole configuration?
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
