Royal Blue or Chocolate Brown. I'd use a solid color spread and maybe some interesting throw pillows with patterns that bring in some yellow. I think the idea of using a king bedspread is good.
My spare room for guests is painted a kelly green. I bought a white iron bed and a yellow dresser. It has a very fresh garden type feel. The bedding is white with large barn red flowers. I bought it at IKEA. I always get tons of compliments. The yellow dresser has some gold in it. Yellow can be tricky as it can bring out brown tones and even green tones when paired with another color. So when pairing yellow with green there has to be a stiff contrast. The kelly green brings out the yellow in the dresser, a light green such as sage would make the dresser have a muddy yellow look.
Since this is just a staging project, I would probably go with white bedding and then add some decorative pillows with a little pop. Target sells a shabby chic line that has all white chenille bedding. That way you are not stressing yourself out on which shade of green. Target also has a lovely floral line by Springmaid in comforters and quilts. Greens, yellows and whites are the main theme in the line. They do have one pattern is that mostly white with a floral detail with hints of yellow. The little bit of yellow might go with the wall color depending on the shade of yellow.
White. It doesn't look "messy" and it can brighten up the room instantly and it goes with everything. Bring in other colors w/ accent pieces like a pillow or two on the bed and a lampshade or vase on the nightstand or dresser and patterned or colored sheets. White = Crisp, clean, bright and EASY!
Thank you all for some great ideas. The blues and whites are nice and fresh but a print bedspread with a bit of red tones might look best. Woodwork is natural stain light wood. The rest of the house has earth tones.
I love blue with yellow, but when I was staging my house for sale I went with white bedding everywhere and I think it looked crisp, clean, and consistent.
What about white, beige or brown? You could find a nice eyelet or comforter cover.
What is the trim in the room, wood or painted?
I agree - white duvet, a nice Euro sham in a pretty colorful print and a couple of solid colored throw pillows that pick up the colors in the sham. Then a pretty solid colored throw folded across the bottom of the bed.
Remember to use the accent color that you use in your solid throw pillows some place else in the room - a glazed pot for a plant, painted wood chair, etc.
