I have seen a handful kitchens with painted cabinets in other than cream/white or black/ distressed that look OK -- generally they have been in the faded / pale "milk paint" style often in a "farm house" or "retro" setting. Professionals have LOTS of tricks to get the colors to work with the cabinet that no DIYer will master -- everything from prep to material to equipment to drying techniques...
If you have successfully painted the cabinets white I suppose you could have "plan b" to go back to that if something goes horribly wrong, but that means more time / money / mess. If you factor in all that maybe looking for a pro now (or new cabinets...) makes more sense.
I would be very hesitant to recommend anything too brightly colored OR anything that looks "dirty" and "almond" is one of the appliance colors that really never looks clean. Blues rarely look good in a tradtional kitchen (except for the "full on" aqua retro or "electric blue" of hard modern). Reds can be pretty subtle, especially those with a brown-ish or "earth tone" element. Can you work in some stain to match? Maybe the wainscoat or crown molding? Gold can be a funny thing, as it too often has that "not so clean" look on both appliances and cabinets -- to close to the color of a grease stain...
SS appliances have best color "longevity"...
