If you love everything else about the house, don't get so fixated on a pantry, especially if there are plenty of cabinets for storage. Once you buy the house and still have the urge for a pantry, I am sure one can be designed for your space.
Our first house was brand new, pantry and all. But we didn't like suburban-living. The second house is a 1930s Arts & Crafts which we love. No pantry but so what. We're fine with the cabinets and one day, when we re-design the kitchen, we'll add one. There are worse things in life than not having a pantry.
Sounds like the oven could have been there for someone in a wheel chair? Maybe?
There are pros and cons in buying a house next door to the kids/relatives. My first reaction, though, was the convenience when your daughter and hubby have children.
