I bought a house recently and in the process of repainting and putting in new carpet. I just got done with the new kitchen. However there are 2 rooms that the previous owner painted RED! I have bought some primer from home depot and it didn't work, but a friend told me there was a paint thats purple and goes on the wall a different color and would cover the red. I asked the people at home depot and they had no clue. Has anyone heard of this special primer or know of a way to cover the red.

I moved into a house with a crayon red "focal wall" in the master bedroom. I covered it with Zinsser B-I-N Primer, then new paint. After the B-I-N was applied, the wall still looked light pink, but when I put my own light color over it, the formerly red wall looked the same as the other three walls. When my mother moved in with me, she got a bedroom that had been painted denim blue and she wanted yellow. I used B-I-N Primer to cover the dark blue before I painted the white. Again, perfect result.
Zinsser B-I-N Primer/Sealer

Red is the absolute worst color to paint on and to remove. You might need at least 2-3 coats of primer and just as much, if not most paint to get good coverage over it.

Thank God you are getting rid of it (for your health and well-being). Red walls do not have a positive effect on people in terms of living space - they create aggression and anger.

Everyone has their own opinion of what looks good and what doesn't. My friend's mom has a big obsession with apples for some reason, and did a whole apple themed kitchen with red paint and it doesn't look bad for what it is.
Red can also work well in bedrooms for a bold and passionate feel.

Don't use Home Depot paint. That's the first mistake. Don't use it on anything.

Stick with the name brands - Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams (love SW Ceiling Paints!)

I'll second BIN as well for primer. Also In-sil X for more difficult jobs.

Of course, it is personal opinion. There is also color psychology and Feng Shui theory . . . my personal opinion is that red is too stimulating for a bedroom where you need to relax. Yes, it enhances passion, but also anger and aggression . . .people with red in the bedroom might find themselves arguing . . .a lot.

We've found BIN to be overrated. Apparently it used to be good but the formula has changed.

Bullseye Waterproof Primer has worked great for us. It's also made by Zinsser.

BIN is good product for COVERING STAINS but there are better options for covering bright / deep colors.

The key is understanding the how the overall formula works not just the weight / volume of solids.

It is best to get primer TINTED to match the finish coat you''ll be applying.

We've had good luck with Kliz primer covering bold colors. You might need 2 coats though.
