Nothing in my house matches. I like it that way. I've got oak and pine in the kitchen, maple in the dining room, birch in the living room (or is it the other way around ... ?), cherry in two bedrooms and walnut in the other.
There should be a conversation going on between the various pieces in a space. But matching, no.
^^This.
OP, you're calling it a dining table, but you're really talking about a kitchen table, one that is in the immediate open area next to the kitchen, the kitchen dining area. Since the table will literally be in the kitchen, it's super important that it compliment the kitchen. For example, I wouldn't put a cherry table with queen anne legs with those oak cabinets. That would be too formal for your cabinets. Keep an eye on the style of your cabinets when chosing a complimentary kitchen table.
The only thing in our home that matches are the two book shelves we bought at the same time from the same guy who hand crafted both of them. Otherwise the furniture is pretty much a free for all when it comes to alleged design.
