Need some ideas for fixing up my entertainment area. I attached a photo of roughly what I'm dealing with so that you can get a general idea. Everything is being removed from the room while we repaint, so I just tossed everything up on shelves so that you could see the general idea.

Basically I'm trying to figure out a way to hide the wiring and make everything look much cleaner.

I toyed with the idea of making a small 3 sided removable "box" for the 2 spots where the wiring runs up through the shelves from one level to the next. That doesn't really take care of the issue with the power strip needing to be hidden though. Some of the wiring could be hidden in the grooves, but again, not really helping the overall issue.

Maybe I could do a false back on both of the lower shelves? Would that look weird to have pine across the back of the 2 shelves and not have pine behind the TV? Anyone have any other ideas?

If it were me-
I'd rip out that shelving, repair the walls, and find a nice armoire that would fit the niche. Then all of that "stuff" can be hidden- especially when NOT in use.

Yes, rather than going through all that work, why don't you just buy an armoire at a used furniture store and build some extra shelves in it if you need to? That would look a whole lot cooler.

Yes, I'm sorry but those shelves are not very attractive and not worth fixing up. You probably didn't want to hear that but it is good advice that was offered. Good luck.

I've been going thru the same sort of thing, although I am not a fan of your current shelves.

Something like this might be useful, though. I got one and even spending 20 minutes unplugging cords and wrangling them into the cable organizer made a tremendous improvement.

Even though I agree the shelves are unattractive and barely functional, I can share one idea a friend of mine used in the same kind of situation, in case you can't purchase an armoire.

She measured and cut sections of heavy cardboard/Foamcore for each wall section between the shelves.

She then covered the cardboard with fabric, securing it around back like a dining chair cushion.

She hid the cords behind the panels and attached the panels to the wall with small foam cubes (to make a sliver of space for the cords) and painter's tape.

It hides the cords and unifies the awkward space.

If you have to keep the shelves, I suggest painting them to match the walls so they don't intrude so much. I like Wmsn4Life's idea too.

I like the idea of placing a backing on the shelves; maybe you could even paint them a coordinating color, then.

The problem I've found with modern TV stands is that they just don't have enough shelves for all the components in your picture (I have even more! LOL).

I don't want it hidden, either; I want to see my collection of electronics and stereo equipment and all that other fun stuff! Plus I need a sliding shelf for my turntable.
