I saw this headboard at JCPenney this morning and I just really love it but it's outside of my budget. Has anyone seen similar headboards at a lower cost? Maybe around $500 or less?

Make it yourself or hire it. Any decent carpenter should be able to make it.
Also there are vintage headboards that have a similar shape. Check out Good Will etc.

Cut shape from sheet of MDF with jigsaw. Cut more MDF for trim. Or if you might try round plastic ceiling medalions cut up. Then caulk and paint .

Yeah; how about less than $200? Build it yourself. That would be a really easy project even for a DIY'er/Weekend Warrior.

I follow a number of DIY bloggers and found one who made her own headboard, similar to the one you are looking for. Her headboard is made of fence boards. She drew a pattern freehand onto cardboard, cut it out and transferred it to the wood. Aw, heck. It's easier to show you rather than tell you how she did it.

Or, if you aren't handy with a hammer and saw, here's one ready made.

I was going to say the same thing build it yourself and if you are not handy maybe find someone to build it for you . Good luck and it is a nice headboard . My husband likes the natural wood colored ones . I like these that you have shown us . I wont start a fight over things like that though .

Shop the local thrift shops - I bet you can find a vintage headboard of a similar shape and just paint it. You can probably get it for under $100!

Thanks everyone! I think I am going to try to DIY it. I'll probably get some MDF and cut out a shape I like with a jigsaw, and then cover it in foam + batting and then white fabric.

There ya go! When you can't find exactly what you want elsewhere, do it yourself. You can find a lot of inspiration online by those who have done the same thing. I'm in the process of making one from some old shutters I found in the garage. Don't forget to take photos of your progress. It's fun to go back and look at how it all came together.
