Howdy . . . I'm looking at building a small, efficiency apartment about 400 square feet (layed out as a square). Can anyone point me to some good floor plans of that size that maximize the amount of space for greatest efficiency? I'm thinking kitchen, living space, 1 bed, 1 bath. I know IKEA specialized in space efficiency, and may try to furnish it with their products, but any other tips would be appreciated.

Search for micro housing plans. There are many available on the internet.

get a Murphy bed or a futon. Those will make the biggest difference in space efficiency.

Study the inside of an RV. Everything stacked and packed like puzzle pieces.
