Pinterest has tons of ideas for small rooms--see the link below. It may not be your style of furniture but the space is very similar to yours. I like the gallery style wall and the neutral sectional.

here's another tiny living room:
Before & After: Decorating a “Tiny Box” of a Living Room

I would go for a cream colored sofa with the brown carpeting and then choose an accent color to brighten up the space.

My apartment living room was also small and had little wall space because of of the layout. I opted to get a love seat and 2 occasional chairs. Rather than end tables I flanked the love seat with two leaning bookshelves and got a small glass topped coffee table. The effect is that the room looks much bigger than it is.

Get what you want and will be comfortable in, and will last into your next place. That said, you seem to be gravitating to large overstuffed furniture, which may be out of proportion for the small room. Maybe try to scale down the furniture in size?

Is it comfortable? Never buy a sofa without trying it out!

When I saw your room, it reminded me of a friends living room. She had dark sofa like your original one & had orange accent (throw pillow, sheer curtain, sunset color candles in her coffee table). It was very well done: the dark color with sunset color.

I like the light blue you picked out. If it is comfortable then go for it or go for that hue of green or blue. It is almost neutral but not neutral. I am not fan of rug over carpet but if the carpet is absolutely horrible then get rug. I still think a sunset/orange accent will be great for your room

Love the Before & After blog. That was impressive transformation. I would not have dared put that bookshelf in that room fearing it would make already tiny room even smaller. But it looks amazing, even with the bold backing, it doesn't make the room smaller. I don't think I could do something like that but that is impressive.
