If you do not have a window that you could open to escape from in a fire, don’t rent that place. There should be an openable window in your bedroom, or close to your bed if it is a one room. If not, the room is not safe.
That's an important tip, hey you guys, thanks for that! I went to see it later today and the ceiling is only a few inches above my head, and I'm only 5'10" tall. The few windows it has, are far too small for any normal person to fit through unless you were a 3-month-old infant. smh
From the picture you posted this place is actually illegal for someone to rent out to a renter.
Well, where I come from it is. Plus, it is not an apartment, it's just a basement.

openable? haha, that's cute
It might not even legal to rent it out. Stay away.
For $1,000 p/m, you'd expect better. I turned it down, explaining to the Landlady what the problems were and included a PDF on NY code for basement apartments.
Thanks to everyone for expressing all your concerns.
It's really good to know all these things...

Glad to hear it and good for you for telling the landlady about the problems.
Good luck in your search.

I'm sure she'll rent it to someone!
Some people don't give a rat's ass about codes or another's life! As long as there's money going in the hand, that's all that matters!
Besides, a Long Island address maybe just what someone needs- regardless of the obvious fire trap!
