This NY Times article about evolving design and interior decorating in Manhattan condos to suit the age of COVID and consumer desires is quite fascinating. What do think of more understated surrounds as we are confined to million dollar plus small spaces? Are Hygge and nature-in-the-city the new luxury? Are consumer-accessible DWR type furniture the new wave that will replace custom designs?
This will be a blip on the radar, and nothing else. Designers, architects, decorators, etc. are just taking advantage of a situation that will be short-lived. Those that feed into this have more money than common sense.
Not sure I understand the question? In early covid I would have said luxury is brand name toilet paper . Maybe luxury is now tied into things you can enjoy while home like a swimming pool, hot tub, or pool table?? From a decorating point of view maybe more color and less traditional pieces?
For me, in any age, it will always be comfort. Comfort is perhaps the ultimate luxury.
I so agree with this. I want comfort in seating, is temperature, in clothing. If I have to remain at home most of the time, I want to be comfy.
But luxury to me now is the ability to afford the things that help me keep occupied in a pleasant way. I am buying art supplies! My luxury is my diversion. I have my diversion set up in our living area, where there is light and work space. My colored pencils, standing in glasses around my desk, are luxuries which I have allowed my self. Having them, using them, thinking about them is a very personal luxury.
Regarding nyc and covid, the big luxury would be separate spaces for home schooling and wfh, which comes down to larger and more distinct spaces. Another big luxury would be a private backyard and a private elevator. A roof deck with a pool would be less luxurious but still a big plus.

Good points about WFH and study areas.
