We wanted to remove wall paper and go back to paint in our dining room, but several years ago, we had to replace a section of the wall and the contractor used joint compound to seal the area where the drywall met the other drywall. The problem that I have is that he spread the joint compound over the older wall paper.
My question is this: Should I try to add more compound and try to feather it out or should I remove all the compound and the old wallpaper and start all over with the seams in the drywall?
If so, should I remove the compound and old wallpaper, what is the best way to take it off?
Without knowing what the EXACT problem was it might be too hard to sand away all the extra compound. If the rest of the walls are in good shape it might be easier to just have a the one walk that was "patched" instead be overlaid a single layer or 1/4" drywall and they retape the joints at the corners / ceilings -- that is the best way to ensure that the old patch never show through...
I'd just pull it all down and put a fresh drywall sheet up.
