We have a bonus room that we are turning into a home gym w/ elliptical, tread mill, universal weight stack, and free weights. Currently the room has a berber type carpet. We do have floor mats for each piece of equipment, but am looking for advice on the best type of flooring for a home gym.

Since you have floor mats already, any flooring will do. If you want to do without the mats, then look into cork or resilient vinyl.

Whenever free weights are involved- especially dumbbells you need rubber under foot.

Try this:

you can get high quality rubber mats, a dri-dek system, or get HD cork. I know someone who put HD cork in their workout room and it looked & felt fantastic

Look into rubber gym flooring. Comes in tiles, or rolls and is installed either loose lay, or you can fully bond them with urethane adhesive.

There are several manufacturers of thick rubber gym flooring

Thanks so if I went with the rubber flooring, would you lay it over the carpet or tear the carpet out?

You would want to take the carpet out. The rubber flooring won't stay in place if the substrate isn't smooth and firm.

Instead of buying the thick black "gym" rubber mats, get "horse" mats. Exact same product, but cheaper.
