Our 2014 CRV makes a loud grinding noise when cold starting sometimes. I talked to the service manager a few days ago about it, and he wants us to leave the car overnight. He said it's a known problem with the VTC actuator. If it happens when they start it, it will be covered under warranty. It it doesn't do it, they will not replace it under warranty.

Has anyone had this same problem, and did you get Honda to replace it? Any advice?

Thanks.

I asked the service manager if I record the sound will that suffice for them to replace the part under warranty and he said no. They have to hear it. It sounds to me that they do not want to fix this problem, but we will see. My luck we will leave the car and it won't happen. Or they may just lie and say "the sound didn't happen when we started it".

This is just very basic due diligence by the service dept. Many auto associated noises can sound quite similar, but involve different issues. Some won’t be covered by warranty and require different parts/labor/methods to repair/$.

Just bring it in and schedule a time for them to be with you they can listen in person with you.

If they won’t do this, it may be time to find another Honda mechanic.

It's unbelievable, this problem is being reported by people all over the internet. It's been happening to different Honda models since 2008 ! Numerous people report that they've had the actuator replaced 3 and 4 times, and it still is happening.

And there is another known problem with our CRV and other model years that Honda cannot find a fix for. When the temperature gets too cold outside, the rear tailgate will not open. I sure hope my wife doesn't get a flat tire during the winter ! I'm sorry we ever bought this car. Never again will I buy a Honda.

I feel your pain, since I have friends who also have an issue with the tailgate when it gets super cold (here in upper midwest). Luckily only during the frigid spells in Jan.-Feb. for the most part.

OTOH, Honda is still considered one of the most reliable brands. If you start to own others you will understand why there is not such thing as a perfect vehicle. Trade-offs exist, and any problems you report won't necessarily be issues for all owners. YMMV.

Regarding the VTC problem, the only site I have seen specifics on what type of repair may work @ driveaccord.net:

Thanks guys. When I asked the service manager if not having the repair done would cause any damage, he said no. I don't know if he is BSing me or not.

I suggest you consult with at minimum a second repair shop. It's taking a slight risk by not repairing it, along with not considering the other associated part replacements. Please review the link I provided and read it in its entireity.

Keep in mind what the person in the link I provided is suggesting is still cheaper than replacing the entire engine out of warranty. Of course this depends on your 'net'- what you plan on doing with the vehicle such as trading it in/selling it/etc.
