My wife's care was 12 years old and it was time to get rid of it. Everything was going out.

Anyway, bought her a new 2010 Honda Civic with auto transmission.

She drives maybe 5 miles a day so her driving doesn't count.

I seldom would drive it but when I do we will be going on long trips (1800 miles round trip) and I am wondering what kind of mpg can I reasonably expect to get?

68 to 75 mph on freeways.

What kind of mileage can I reasonably expect to get?

You can go to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/***/findacar.htm - broken link) (find and compare cars) and see both the EPA estimates and the user entered values. You should check 2009 and 2010 to get a reasonable sample.

Hes not asking about what a v8 ford truck gets. I would say the car will get about 27 around town and 35 or better on the open road.

If wifey is driving it 2.5 miles to work then 2.5 home, it won't warm up fully in such a short trip, your mileage will be considerably worse than in normal operation. You may also have problems with sludging in the engine. As Clint says: "...that's just the way it is."

My son has an 08 and he gets the same as you; mostly 38 mpg.

Drive it the right way and keep to 70Mph and you can get it up quite a bit.

Everything depends on driving style.

Update!

Put fuel in for the first time last night.

6.65 gallons which got us right at 186 miles giving 28.0 mpg.

To many it might not be great but coming from a vehicle that got 15 mpg, not to mention a $100 bill it took to fill er up, on a good day it is rather liberating.

Of the 186 miles 80 were highway and 106 were in town, stop and go when my wife traveled back and forth to work. Work is about a mile away and has 2 stoplights, 2 stop signs and a 30 mph speed limit. If I watch it, drive the speed limit which is 70 mph here, I imagine I won't have a problem getting 35 mpg on trips.
