Right? I'm renting a super old apartment that hasn't been very well kept. I enjoy fixing things up and this place is pretty temporary...but this is just really gross (and I like taking bubble baths but there's really no way I'm doing that in here unless I can make it sparkle!) I really want to clean it up but I don't want to waste time or money buying things that won't work. Any suggestions are welcome!

Did you look in the tub before signing the lease? If so I guess you accepted it as it is. Or did it become that way after living in it? Something is fishy here unless you're just asking us how to clean it.

It's just rust/hard water stains, what is "disgusting" or "gross" about that?
CRL or vinegar should take care of it.
If it's an older property and tub and the corrosion is through to the metal, the only solution is to have it refinished. But still, nothing wrong with the tub except some natural discoloration. You can take a bath no problem.
I suppose if the landlord guaranteed everything to be in sparkly-brand-new condition, you might have a case. But since you are already aware you are renting a "super-old" apartment I'm guessing that excuse won't fly.

And SOS pads. I know I'll take heat for that, but a little steel wool won't hurt in this case.

non-fuming oven cleaner (AFTER you have removed the rust with the other product and RINSED.)

Is the CRL you all are referring to CLR? (as in Clear?)

SOS is regular "steel wool" with soap. IT IS NOT MEAN FOR CLEANING PORCELAIN COATED TUBS!

Use something like a SCOTCH BRITE PAD -- Amazon.com: Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Tub & Shower Scrubber 549H, 1-Count (Pack of 6): Health & Personal Care

or

ONE OF THESE NEWER 'MAGIC ERASERS' -- Amazon.com: Mr Clean Magic Eraser Bath Scrubber, 4-Count (Pack of 2): Health & Personal Care

If you use something that makes surface ROUGHER it just gets HARDER AND HARDER to clean!

What is an SOS pad good for? Well the guy who invented it liked the fact that in addition to shiny up aluminum pots it also thinned em out with each polishing so eventually he could sell new pots to the "good housekeepers". Really, the company so much as admits it: About Save Our Saucepans | S.O.S®

You are lucky to have a cast iron tub instead of cheapo fiberglass or plastic. Once you clean it up, it will be nicer than the tubs in most $300,000 homes. Maybe you will want to go ahead and replace the faucet and mixer as well. It is nto all that expensive and if you will be there a while it will be worth it. Get the LLs permission of course.
