Our house was completed in 1986. We have a well, a septic system, and a garbage disposal.
The septic tank has been pumped out once since the house was built.
The garbage disposal is only used for small amounts --- mostly the bits that are left on a plate after a meal or scraped out of a pot. No tough, fibrous veggies or bones.
I seldom use bleach.
There are only two of us now, but originally it was hubby, me, and two boys.
So you can have a garbage disposer with a septic system. It just depends on whether you want to keep it on a soft diet!
Same here but we have lived here since it was built in 1993. I have had mine pumped about every 3 years tho.
Location: Finally made it to Florida and lovin' every minute!

It was suggested to us that we pump out at least every two years; once a year would be better, they said. If you take care of it and, like suzyQ says, don't overdo, it should be fine, IMO
The only reason we had ours septic tank pumped out was because we tried to sell the house. It did not sell, so we are still here. Never had any problems with the system.
Our neighbors have a disposal (on a septic) and they have not had a problem in the 15 years they have lived there. In fact, they have never had to pump the septic tank.
I think that the advice of having them pumped every 5 years is way over rated.
After having a disposal, then moving here to a house without one, I thought I would really miss it. It's been 15 years, I don't miss it at all.
