We live in central NJ and were reseeding new lawn this fall. However, we have a small area on the side of house where have less than 3 hrs sunlight. We've already chose the dense shade grass mix, but seems not growing too well. Very few sprout while other area has been growing 2 inches already. That area originally had small trees planting, but my husband does not like too many trees near the house so we had landscaper chopped them down. Landscaper tried to put in grass seed for that area last fall, but the result was not good. We tried again this year, but still not seeing better improvement even we put in 2 inches of premium topsoil. If it still fails this year, what else we can do over there? Should we just give up growing grass in that area and spend money put in paver or growing some other plants that do not require direct sunlight?

Knowing what zone you're in first, helps with what plant material will actually survive-
Interactive USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map for the Continental United States - Plantmaps.com

There is usually good information from your local extension service-

And always consider drought tolerant specimens to conserve water usage-

In our area we have birds of prey - falcons, eagles, osprey... A friend of ours put in a huge koi pond with waterfalls and lots of koi. Within three days his fish were gone. AND he was afraid to go out into his backyard area because these giant hungry birds were swooping down looking for a snack...

... all of a sudden he had a bunch of raccoon friends, too...

There are grass seeds that are designed for shady locations, just have to read the package.

If you prefer shrubs or perennials for shades try Hosta, Astilbe, Bleeding Heart, or Rhododendron. They are readily available for reasonable price.

I did try shady mix from Scotts, but not working well. I gave it last try and put in extremely volumne of a small bag of shady mix from another company and covered the area with seed aide and see if it will work better.

Is it an area where you could put some plants/shrubs, etc.? If so, hostas are easy and look nice.

We have a Koi pond, no bugs really but about $50/month added to our electric bill for the pump--never again (it was here when we bought the house--along with 4 other ponds that we don't use). Looks nice though.

How about moss?

Or can you put a finished landscape with pebbles or mulch?

My husband prefers grass. We have some big cypress trees on the border and shady area is between the trees and the house. It's facing west and on the side of the house. The area only can be veiwed from our dining room window or when neighbor pass by to their backyard from garage. I am also thinking about pebbles and some hosta if the grass is not growing well. I can also put in a bamboo fountain and some decoration rocks.
