We are considering purchasing property and building a house. However, the property we are looking at has a run down house on it that needs to be demolished. So my question is what is the cheapest way to go about it? Do people do it for free for the wood/mantels etc? If not, what would it typically run? I'll go ahead and post hubby's idea..light a match! Not sure that's really an option. Thinking it would be against county code or something.

Have you called the local habitat people or the volunteer fire company yet?
Beyond that it's about hiring it done.

Be sure you know about buried septic and oil tanks and that sort of thing.
(SWAG? $5-10,000)

hth

Lol..actually it's not arson if it's your own property and there are no fraudulent intentions of collecting insurance money.

Ohhh..I forgot about oil tanks. Will have to check on that! I'm not sure how the house was heated..it's abandoned and not safe to really venture in to far.

Maybe I can advertise "Free House" on craigslist??

call the local fire department, see if they want to use the property for training. I know some people who have done it like that.

Call the local volunteer fire department. You 'donate' the house for a Tax Deduction, and they burn it down as part of an "excercise."

I'd like to see if some of the things could be rehabbed first....recycled....habitat....etc.

Then donate what's left.

A lot of houses had to (and still have to) be demolished in my area after Hurricane Katrina.

Generally what is done is to call a demolition company. You need to get demolition permits and so on, and they will know what ones to get. They will have insurance and so on, so that you will not be liable for unexpected injuries or harm. They will remove all of the debris and if there is a slab foundation that you want removed, they can do that too.

put it out by the road with a sign on it that says $50 and someone will drive by and grab it, that worked for a couch I was trying to get rid of once.

That's a good idea..and to get a tax deduction to boot..I'm thinking this would the way to go. I would save what I could to use in the new house..maybe some old door hardware..etc.
