How to you remove stench from raccoons in the attic? (floor, painting)

Last winter, a raccoon broke into our attic and had babies. They lived there for months before we realized it. We were finally able to get rid of them. However, a fetid odor developed on the upper floor of the house due to the urine and feces that they left behind in the insulation, etc. Although we've removed the old insulation, the smell remains.

The attic is no more than a crawlspace, so it is very hard to get up their. How can we disinfect and get rid of the odor? Also, is there anything to get rid of the smell of their pheromones, so that other raccoons don't get drawn to the attic?

One of them thermal fogger type set ups where they burn chemicals to produce lots of ozone. Maybe an ozone generator type equipment.

Got to be careful some of that equipment also can produce localized heat.

The thermal foggers might be more powerful, they wipe out just about anything that has odor, smell or relies on it. Produce a type gas that penetrates all crannies.

Usually must be out of the house to do it.

You need to find the area that they used as a litterbox. There is probably some poo up there still or perhaps an area saturated with urine.

Is this something a non-professional can do? Where can we rent such equipment. (Although based on what you say above, I'm kind of afraid of setting the house on fire, though.)

Would a pest control company usually handle this or some other type of company?

Yeah, we found a huge pile of poo. I'm hoping there isn't more hidden somewhere else. It smells like they urinated all over. However, there was so much urine in one area that it left a brown stain on the ceiling below.

Usually these type companies are like under fire damage or fire restoration. It is a common thing to do prior to rehab for homes that have had fires with smoke damage.

You might be able to rent the equipment. The thermal fogging equipment probably has more oomph, basically the prime ingredient is probably a form of ozone, might be other helpful chemicals as well.

I think you can get equipment that generates ozone by some type of electrical means with water. Might not be as effective.

This type of cleaning you do not have to do all the other cleaning, painting, attempting to cover up the smells. I've seen it done on nasty houses and there is no smells afterwards. Unsure of the price (I had nothing to do with the contracting for it) but think it was probably in the few hundreds. For just a very small volume like an attic might be pretty reasonable, the amount of volume counts.

Maybe you can find some sources on line as well.
