Most of the solutions given were long term, It seemed to me you were just talking about relief for the weekend. Personally if you are talking a few days, I would take it out and run it. You will not collect enough dust etc to hurt anything in that time.
BTW even though I change filters regularly, I have cleaned my own coil unit, (previous owners weren't as good about it) It just isn't that hard, it takes like 20 minutes.
I think he wants to find a place to buy those filters. A/C guy will come to fix the leak, and maybe bring the right filter, but that's only once. They install the units but I don't think they sell the filters.

But AC guy has to get them somewhere. Surely he will share his source.

Eh, not always. My experience has been "you have to go to the manufacturer of the unit" or call them out.
My first A/C guy - who is no longer my A/C guy for reasons such as this - claimed it was a liability/warranty issue.
My current A/C guy says the high MERV filters can damage the system over time - and we are better off going with a cheaper filter and replacing it more often. I've read and heard that in other places as well.
He's still my A/C guy, but I take care of the filters myself. Since it seems everyone in my family has allergies, I'm pretty anal about them and probably change them before I really have to.
If you burn candles, because it is the candles that are making your air filters gray/black. If this is the case, you do not have mold or horribly dirty air filters. Just continue changing them on a normal basis. Even if you think your candles are not burning black smoke, the smoke is still going thru your return air and causing the filter to be black. It should not cause a bad odor unless they just are not changed often, then the filter would cause a musty smell.
